One of the original goals of the BEA

was to promote and encourage new opportunities for learning, with an emphasis on credibility. When adequate financial resources were established, a program was put in place to review and fund such programs. Mini-grant applications and procedures were developed during the 1995-1996 school year. A committee of BEA
members was appointed to screen and select grant applications in October and April each year on the basis of established criteria.

The first round of mini-grants was funded in the spring of 1996. At the time, seven grants worth $1,483 were awarded. In the spring of 2003, the BEA voted to fund mini-grants for $5,000 each semester. Since the program began, the BEA has funded over 320 projects, totaling more than $84,000.
